What Is a Heavy Winch Machine for Road and Bridge Construction Project?
Product Introduction
Bridge‑road construction winches mainly cover gear‑driven slow‑speed winches (JM series), variable‑frequency winches and friction winches (JMM series). They are widely applied in cantilever form traveller movement, arch rib hoisting, girder sliding, stay‑cable and main‑cable strand paying‑off, as well as tunnel and slope traction operations.
Different from ordinary building‑site material‑lifting winches, bridge‑grade winches are engineered for long‑distance rope travel, heavy‑load precise positioning, frequent horizontal pulling and open‑air operation under strong‑wind conditions.
Note: JMM friction winches are designed for continuous rope paying‑off. They must NOT be used for long‑time suspended heavy loads to prevent slip‑dropping hazards.

Main Application Scope
Cantilever traveller moving and anchoring for cast‑in‑place bridges
Arch‑rib hoisting and cable‑stayed erection for arch bridges
Strand pulling and paying‑off for suspension bridges and cable‑stayed bridges
Horizontal dragging and positioning for T‑girders and steel box girders
Material and formwork traction for tunnel and mountain‑slope projects
Auxiliary winch units for bridge girder erecting machines
Key Technical Features
Dual‑brake System for Critical Hoisting: Working brake installed on high‑speed shaft plus safety disc brake fitted on low‑speed drum shaft provide double protection against load dropping caused by gearbox failure. Standard single‑brake construction winches are prohibited for arch‑rib and traveller hoisting.
Large‑Rope‑Capacity Drum: Drum structure adapts to steel wire ropes of several hundred meters. Drum flange height shall reach at least 1.5 times the nominal rope diameter to avoid rope jumping‑off. Rated pulling force refers to tension on the first‑layer rope; actual pulling force decreases significantly under multi‑layer winding conditions.
Variable‑Frequency Synchronous Control for Multi‑Winch Groups: VFD synchronized control is required for 2‑unit or 4‑unit combined hoisting. Real‑time monitoring of tension and travelling distance prevents unbalanced structural stress induced by wind load and position deviation. Manual jog‑control is not permitted for key lifting procedures.
Reliable Foundation and Ground Anchor Requirement: Horizontal pulling generates tremendous overturning force. Counterweight blocks can only serve as auxiliary fixing measures. Reinforced concrete ground anchors or embedded anchor bolts are compulsory.
Strict Steel Wire Rope Specifications: Minimum safety factor reaches 6‑8 for critical bridge hoisting tasks. At least 3 full dead‑turns of wire rope shall remain on the drum all the time, excluding clamping fixed turns. Long‑distance cyclic operation may produce internal wire breakage without obvious surface damage.
Outdoor Waterproof and Anti‑Condensation Design: Motors and electric cabinets shall maintain waterproof performance for riverside and open‑air job sites. No‑load brake test must be carried out before formal operation to eliminate slipping risks brought by damp brake pads.

Model Selection Guidance
JM Series Gear‑Driven Slow‑Speed Winch: Suitable for traveller operation, steel box girder hoisting and girder dragging. Supports long‑time heavy‑load suspension, the most widely adopted model for bridge projects.
Variable‑Frequency JM Winch: Preferred option for multi‑unit synchronous operation and precise component positioning under cross‑river strong‑wind environment.
JMM Friction Winch: Only for continuous strand paying‑off. Forbidden for long‑time load suspension.
JK Fast‑Speed Winch: Limited to light‑material transportation. Strictly prohibited for traveller, arch‑rib and cable hoisting.
Important Safety Warnings
❌ Never adopt JK high‑speed winches for heavy‑load precision bridge lifting.
❌ Never take counterweight blocks as the sole fixing method for winches.
❌ Never exhaust wire rope, keep no less than 3 residual turns on the drum.
❌ Never apply JMM friction winches for long‑term suspended load holding.
❌ Avoid excessive speed reduction via VFD, which leads to poor motor cooling and potential brake failure.
